A swarm of ‘Butterflies’ at the City of Manchester Stadium

Britannia Row’s ‘Butterflies’ give more punch to a world boxing match in front of 55,000 spectators

Manchester (UK), 25^th May 2008 – The match for the world boxing championship, in front of an audience of 55,000 (which also included Mike Tyson, in a front-row seat), was amplified by “Butterfly”, the line array by Outline of Brescia (Italy).

The contestants were Mexico’s Juan Lazcano and England’s Ricky Hatton (the latter won, thus retaining his IBO light-welterweight title).

The venue hosting the prestigious event was the City of Manchester Stadium, a.k.a. COMS, the largest soccer pitch in England. As well as soccer matches, the stadium also hosts top concerts since, with its 107 x 71 metre for 60,000 spectators, it’s one of those with largest capacities.

For sound reinforcement at the COMS, the Britannia Row technicians - system engineer Davide Lombardi and FOH engineer Derrick Zieba - set up eight clusters with twelve Butterfly Hi-Packs each, for a total of ninety six modules; the bottom end was courtesy of eight Subtech 218, flown in four clusters of two subs each. The PWM power amps were also Outline - T9 (2 x 4800W), a single rack unit and twelve kilos each.

As well as the MC’s voice and the contributions from Sky digital TV (music and publicity), there was also a performance by classical singer Russell Watson.

On the subject of the Outline line array, the event’s FOH engineer Derrick Zieba commented: "The Outline system performed perfectly in the stadium situation, there was enough power to overcome the noise from the huge crowd of enthusiastic Ricky Hatton fans without problems. The Outline Butterfly’s projection enabled us to turn off the in-house coverage on the end stands and just use the Outline hangs from the centre stand. The boxes proved easy to rig and their small format ensured Sky TV clear shots of the ring. These small powerful boxes provided the best solution to ensure perfect sound for this unusually large boxing match audience."

It is also worth noting that for the audio no more than 7 tons could be flown. The remarkable lightness of the Outlinearrays was therefore once more a winning factor.

Massa di ‘Farfalle’ al City of Manchester Stadium

Il Butterfly di Britannia Row ‘carica’ il mondiale di boxe di fronte a 55mila spettatori

Manchester (Inghilterra), 25 maggio 2008- L’incontro per aggiudicarsi il titolo mondiale di boxe, di fronte a un’audience di 55mila persone (tra le quali, in prima fila, anche Mike Tyson), è stato amplificato da ‘Butterfly’, il line array dell’Outline di Brescia.

Gli sfidanti erano il messicano Juan Lazcano e l’inglese Ricky Hatton (quest’ultimo né è uscito vincitore, conservando così il titolo IBO dei pesi welter).

Teatro del prestigioso evento era il City of Manchester Stadium, detto anche COMS, il più grande terreno di calcio in Inghilterra. Oltre alle partite di calcio questa struttura ospita famosi concerti poiché con i suoi 107 x 71 metri per 60.000 spettatori è tra quelle più capienti.

Per la sonorizzazione del COMS i tecnici della Britannia Row - Davide Lombardi system engineer e Derrick Zieba fonico di sala - hanno predisposto 8 cluster formati da 12 Butterfly Hi-Pack ciascuno per un totale di 96 moduli; quale rinforzo alle basse frequenze sono stati sospesi 8 Subtech 218 disposti su 4 cluster formati da 2 elementi ciascuno. I finali di potenza PWM erano anch’essi Outline, modello T9 (2 x 4800W) a una sola unità rack e 12 kg di peso.

Oltre alla voce dello speaker ed ai contributi da parte della TV digitale Sky (musica e pubblicità), vi è stata anche la performance del cantante classico Russel Watson.

A proposito del line array Outline, ecco i commenti di Derrick Zieba, fonico FOH dell’evento: "Il sistema ha eseguito perfettamente il lavoro allo stadio; c'era abbastanza potenza da superare senza problemi il rumore generato dall'enorme audience di fan entusiasti per Ricky Hatton. La sua lunga gittata ci ha consentito di spegnere i diffusori 'resident' (di proprietà della struttura) destinati alla sonorizzazione del terzo anello - il più lontano - permettendoci di lavorare solo con gli array Outline posizionati al centro. Le 'farfalle' si sono dimostrate facili da movimentare ed il loro 'small form factor' ha reso vita facile anche a Sky TV che ha potuto eseguire agevolmente le riprese del ring con le sue telecamere. Questi compatti e potenti diffusori hanno costituito sicuramente la miglior soluzione esibendo un suono perfetto per questo 'boxing match' dall'audience insolitamente vasta".

Vi è inoltre da segnalare che per l’audio vi erano a disposizione meno di 7 tonnellate di peso. La notevole leggerezza dell’Outlinearray è stata ancora una volta determinante.
