148 Butterflies for Foo Fighters

Brit Row’s Outline ‘Butterflies’ amplify the biggest rock event ever held at the New Wembley Stadium

The Foo Fighters played their biggest gig ever at Wembley Stadium

London (UK), June 6-7 2008 - 160,000 tickets sold in just two hours, months before the show. These are the figures of the Foo Fighters concert staged on June 6^th and 7^th at Wembley Stadium, one of the world’s most famous venues and a “shrine” for music and soccer fans, as well as a location for other high profile events.

Wembley was a historical location for Foo Fighters. “This is a concert we’ll talk about for the next twenty years”, said the group’s leader Dave Grohl on-stage on Saturday 7^th June. In fact, in that precise moment, his band was joined by two members of Led Zeppelin - guitarist Jimmy Page and bass player John Paul Jones - who played an unique encore with them. Along with Foo Fighters, the pair performed “Rock and Roll” and “Ramble on”, hits from the band renowned for “Stairway to heaven”, enthralling the crowd.

For the sound reinforcement at the largest rock event ever staged at the new Wembley stadium (as the show was described) the organizers called in Britannia Row Productions, the legendary London rental company with a considerable stock of Butterfly systems manufactured by Outline of Brescia (Italy).

Sound coverage of the stadium was mainly entrusted to 148 Outline Butterfly CDH 483 Hi-Packs, backed up by 72 Outline Subtech 218 subwoofers; powered as always by Outline T9 power amplifiers (2 x 4800W in a single rack unit and weighing in at just 12 kilos).

The audio technicians in charge - system engineer Davide Lombardi and Bryan Worthen (FOH) - installed and fine-tuned fourteen clusters comprising various quantities of Butterfly CDH 483 Hi-Packs, for a total of 148 systems, and thirty two EV X-Line systems; the bottom end was covered by flying sixteen Outline Subtech 218 and twenty four EV X-Line Subs. The remaining forty eight Outline Subtech 218 were ground-installed along the stage. The systems used for short-throw front-fill coverage were Outline DVS 15 and L-Acoustics ARCS.

Regarding the Outline line arrays used for Foo Fighters’ show, System Engineer Davide Lombardi commented: "Butterfly is considered one of the best line arrays in this sector and is used regularly on the occasion of key events. I’m pleased to use it every time, as are all those at Brit Row."

148 Butterfly per i Foo Fighters

L’Outline Butterfly di Brit Row amplifica il più grande evento rock mai realizzato al New Wembley Stadium

Londra (Inghilterra), 6-7 giugno 2008 - 160.000 biglietti venduti in sole due ore molti mesi prima dello show. Questi i numeri del concerto dei Foo Fighters tenutosi il 6 e il 7 giugno a Wembley Stadium, uno tra i più famosi al mondo, “tempio” della musica e del calcio nonché sede di importantissimi eventi.

Per i Foo Fighters quella di Wembley è stata una location storica. “Questo è un concerto del quale parleremo per i prossimi venti anni” - ha dichiarato dal palco il leader Dave Grohl sabato 7 giugno: in quel momento la sua band è stata infatti raggiunta da due membri dei Led Zeppelin - il chitarrista Jimmy Page e il bassista John Paul Jones - che si sono aggiunti a loro per un insolito bis. Insieme ai Foo Fighters i due hanno eseguito “Rock and Roll” e “Ramble on”, successi della band di “Stairway to heaven”, mandando in estasi la folla.

Per l’amplificazione sonora del più grande evento rock mai realizzato all’interno del nuovo stadio di Wembley (tale è stata definita la sua portata) ci è voluto l’intervento della Britannia Row Productions, gloriosa ‘rental company’ londinese in possesso di una notevole quantità di sistemi Butterfly prodotti dalla Outline di Brescia.

La copertura acustica dello stadio è stata in gran parte affidata a 148 moduli Outline Butterfly CDH 483 Hi-Pack supportati da 72 subwoofer Outline Subtech 218; tutto materiale come sempre alimentato da finali di potenza Outline T9 (2 x 4800W, una sola unità rack e soli 12 kg di peso).

I tecnici audio responsabili - Davide Lombardi System Engineer e Bryan Worthen fonico FOH - hanno così predisposto e regolato 14 cluster formati da una quantità variabile di Butterfly CDH 483 Hi-Pack per un totale di 148 moduli e 32 moduli EV X-Line; quale rinforzo alle basse frequenze sono stati sospesi 16 Outline Subtech 218 e 24 EV X-Line Sub. Appoggiati al terreno, subito sotto al palcoscenico, vi erano i restanti 48 Outline Subtech 218. Quali sistemi ‘front-fill’ per la copertura a corta gittata sono stati impiegati diffusori Outline DVS 15 ed ARCS di L-Acoustics.

A proposito del line array Outline, ecco i commenti di Davide Lombardi, System Engineer per lo show dei Foo Fighters: "Butterfly è considerato uno dei migliori line array in questo settore e viene regolarmente impiegato in occasione di eventi primari. Sono felice di usarlo ogni volta insieme con tutti in Brit Row".
